Nothing can be so delicious as harvesting your own blackcurrants, which are easy to grow and require little maintenance. Plant in deep, fertile, moisture-retentive soil, burying the stems 5cm below the point at which they were in the pot. Over the years, prune out old and dead stems in the centre, in winter, to provide an open bush that will be more productive.
Plant: pot grown or bare-rooted bushes from autumn to spring.
Varieties: Ben Connan, Ben Sarek (both compact varieties)
