Useful tips on how to grow & enjoy fruit & veg. from your windowsill !
I don’t profess to be an expert on growing food in windowboxes by any means, but I do have a lot of gardening experience generally, having run community garden projects in Manchester and London, taught organic gardening courses, run my own landscape gardening company and gardened from as long as I can remember.
I also love to experiment with new gardening methods!
I’ve been particularly interested in the work of Garden Organic (formerly the HDRA) and have keenly read books by eminent organic gardeners, such as Dr. Shelwell Cooper and Patrick Whitehead on techniques which have really influenced me in my gardening.
I’m now based in Brighton, where amongst other things I've helped get the ‘Grow your Neighbours Own’ scheme off the ground and been part of the Brighton & Hove Organic Gardeners Group (BHOGG) and Brighton & Hove Food Partnership management committees.
This is the first time I've tried growing fruit and vegetables in a windowbox though. See about what inspired me by reading The Seed of the Idea section here.
As a gardener, I’m always learning and open to learn more. If you have any comments on anything you’ve read here or have any tips yourself then I’d really like to hear from you. Get in touch by clicking on the Gardener's Journal icon at the top of each page - Look forward to hearing from you !
